COURSE SYLLABUS

Preparing for a Climb

  • Equipment and its proper use: harness, helmet, carabiners, belay device, rock shoes, chalk bag
  • Selecting appropriate climbs
  • Access and environmental issues. NZAC code of conduct for rock climbers
  • Hazards at a crag and common causes of accidents

Belaying Top Rope Climbs

  • Tying in with a retraced figure 8 knot
  • Communication and companion checks
  • Top rope belaying techniques with active and passive Assisted Brake Devices (such as Grigri, smart, pilot, Giga Jul)
    • Positioning
    • Keeping slack out of the system
    • Belaying with tubular devices (such as an ATC) and the advantages and disadvantages of these devices
  • Lowering a climber

Climbing Top Rope Climbs

  • Tactics - keeping shoes clean, warming, reading the route
  • Communication and companion checks
  • Movement techniques
  • Being lowered
